And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
Pastors care for the sheep.
Teachers explain the scriptures.
Prophets hear from God and speak for Him.
Evangelists spread the good news.
Apostles open up new territories.
All five offices are greatly needed today as a ministry within the local church. Begin to love and appreciate each office equally. Honor each office and give each office expression.
If you do the body will be cared for, will grow in scriptural understanding, will hear from God more clearly, will be enlarged, and will be spread throughout the earth.
The Pastor by himself is a bad substitute for the five fold ministry. As a Pastor for 25 years I came to this conclusion early on. It is also important to note that if an individual believes he operates in one of the five-fold ministries but has issues with submission, that person will blow up the church.
As in all the positions of church leadership a proper submission and chain of authority must be respected. A person who is conceited and proud is more interested in self glorification than glorifying Christ. This is a big reason why Pastors have shied away from opening arms to other members of the five fold.
A true Godly example of the five-fold will always, as Jesus did, put the body first. He or she would not cause divisions in the body or hinder the great commission.
I see a time in the near future where the body will be blessed by the five-fold in operation within the local church. A time where the church will be so healthy that each local church supports evangelists and other members of the five-fold sending them out to minister to others and fulfill their call.
Presently, a man or woman who is called into the five-fold ministry is limited to the amount of money that can be raised in between preaching engagements to keep the ministry flowing. As the body awakens to the revival of unity and working together we will begin to see stronger, healthier, spiritually equipped, and financially secure churches who are able to send more people out into various mission fields.
The big lie is that we are fine on our own, an island unto ourselves. What we should be doing is work together looking to add more gifts and more specialties to our local congregations. Why should a true evangelist become a Pastor to make a living and pay his bills? Pastors should be Pastors, teachers need to teach and so on. As a result, the body will be blessed as it is equipped, edified, and ready to do the work of the ministry.
